Homeschooling isn't legally recognized in California's education codes and laws but that doesn't mean it isn't a viable option. Homeschooling in California is a relatively straightforward, streamlined process - and it's growing in popularity! We've created a thirty-minute video that walks you through each of the legal paths you can follow to homeschool your children, along with our recommendations and tips for homeschooling success.
After watching our free on-demand video about your legal options for homeschooling in California, and giving some thought to what homeschool path is right for your family, you may want to take time to learn even more about the options. We've outlined some of the resources available to help you find the homeschooling information and support you need.
California Statewide Homeschool Associations
There are multiple homeschool support organizations that support families who choose to homeschool here in California. Each one has many pages dedicated to helping families get started on their homeschool path. Each one has varying support services and some even provide you step-by-step directions for filing your Private School Affidavit.
We suggest that all families who choose to homeschool join at least one homeschool support organization.
Please enjoy our video with leaders from multiple homeschool support organizations.
To learn more about these organizations and many others please visit their websites:
National Homeschool Support Organization
• HSLDA, the Home School Legal Defense Association - HSLDA is committed to helping all families be able to homeschool by monitoring homeschooling legislation and providing access to attorneys for families with homeschooling issues and concerns.
*Please note that HSLDA is a Christian organization that has been criticized for its ties to the Christian Right and its advocacy for various conservative political and religious causes, some of which are unrelated to homeschooling. We include them here for their track record of supporting homeschooling rights in robust ways throughout all 50 states, especially states where homeschooling is more rigid and families need more support.
Private School Satellite Programs (PSPs)
Are you looking for even more support? Maybe a Private School Satellite Program (PSP) is right for you. PSPs offer administrative support by filing the Private School Affidavit (PSA) with the California Department of Education (CDE) on your behalf, as well as maintaining the required school records for you.
We have compiled this list of PSP programs that service California families so you can compare and contact them for more information. Please take a look at our Homeschool Experts PSP Episode to learn more and meet a few PSP leaders.
Independent Study Charter Schools
If you think you need even more support in homeschooling and you want the help of a California credentialed teacher you may want to try an independent study charter school. We have compiled multiple resources to help you in navigating this homeschooling path!
