We all know exercise is good for us, but trying to fit it into our already busy homeschool schedules can be challenging. However, there are many health and wellbeing benefits associated with daily physical activity that make exercise an important, and worthwhile, addition to your family's daily routine.
Exercise increases our levels of endorphins, serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine which all support emotional well-being, motivation, and our response to stress. As if happiness isn't enough to warrant more exercise in your day, physical exercise also works out your brain! According to neuroscientist Wendy Suzuki, physical activity has a positive effect on the brain which is immediate, long-lasting, and protective. A single workout can improve a student’s ability to focus on a task for up to two hours!
Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans issued by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services suggest that it is important to provide young people opportunities and encouragement to participate in physical activities that are appropriate for their age,
that are enjoyable, and that offer variety. Children and adolescents ages 6 through 17 years should do 60 minutes (1 hour) or more of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity daily.
